My research focuses on al-Farabi's (d. 950) philosophy of language. In particular, I'm interested in his theory of semantics and its interface with syntax: Farabi makes the deceptively simple point that different languages can signify the same content more or less well. He has in mind both grammatical syntax, which varies across natural languages, and the (unvarying) logical syntax or 'form' of propositions. I accordingly argue that a systematic construal of his philosophy of language is centered around what I call 'semantic transparency.'
